Root canal [also known as Endodontic Treatment] is a procedure that
allows a severely decayed tooth to be saved. Before root canals, teeth
were extracted, leaving the patient with missing teeth. Root canal therapy
is a procedure to save a tooth that has been compromised by trauma, inflammation or infection, and is usually done in one appointment. It is a
routine procedure in which the nerve is simply removed from the tooth
with any areas of decay. The tooth’s foundation is then built back to a
sufficient size and in most cases, a protective crown is placed over the
new foundation, restoring the tooth for many years of functional service.
